The 5th Generation Ford Explorer (U502) was introduced for the 2011 model year and continued through 2019. This generation changed the Explorer from its previous body-on-frame configuration to a unibody SUV.
The 6th Generation Ford Explorer (U625) was introduced for the 2020 model year. It returned to a rear-wheel-drive-based architecture and remains the current-generation Explorer.
Ford introduced significant updates for the 2025 model year, including redesigned front and rear exterior elements, a revised interior and new infotainment technology. These updates do not represent a new generation.
